Chapter Eleven
âMom, Mom, can Ethan come over?â
April frowned. âWhen?â
âNow.â
âNot tonight.â
âAww, but we have math homework that we want to do together.â
Eddie pursed his lips. âBecause neither of you can manage to figure it out by yourselves? Come on, dude. More like, you want to play video games?â
Marcus shrugged. âMaybe, after we get done with our homework.â He shot Ted a sly grin.
âBut Grandadâs here because you asked him to stay. Ethan can wait until next week. You see him all the time.â
Marcus gave Ted a conspiratorial grin. âI bet Grandad wouldnât mind going to see his new girlfriend instead, would you?â
Ted chuckled. âIâm staying out of it. Iâm here if you want me; Iâll get out of the way if you donât.â
âYouâre not in the way!â Eddie said adamantly.
Ted felt bad. Heâd only been joking.
âNo, you could never be in the way, Grandad,â said Marcus. âI love you being here, but are you really going to tell me that you donât want to see your new girlfriend again?â He grinned. âRemember, when I was little, you promised me youâd never lie to me.â
Ted had to laugh. âI would never lie to you. But youâre not putting me on the spot like that. I told you once. Iâm staying out of it. Iâm not going to be your bargaining chip against your parents.â
Marcus blew out an exaggerated sigh. âFair enough.â He turned back to April. âSo?â
April looked at Eddie and then at Ted.
âWell,â said Eddie, âif you donât want to make the most of the time you could have with your grandad â¦â
Marcus made a face. âI do. Itâs just â¦â
Ted took pity on the kid. He didnât like seeing the struggle on his face. âItâs okay. I get it. Iâm here all week. I know you want to see me, but you donât need the rest of your life to stop because of me.â He smiled at April and Eddie. âI donât mind if you donât.â
Eddie shook his head. âHe and Ethan have been waiting for this new game to come out for months. But â¦â
âItâs fine. Iâm here all week. None of us thought that me staying meant that we had to be in each otherâs pockets the whole time, did we?â
âThatâs right,â agreed Marcus.
âIf Ethan comes, I want to see your homework finished, both of you, before thereâs any video games,â said April.
Marcus grinned. âSure. It wonât take us long.â He came and wrapped his arm around Ted. âThanks, Grandad.â
Eddie looked at Ted. âYou know we donât want you out of the way, right?â
Ted laughed. âOf course, I do. I want to see you guys just as much as I want to see Marcus.â
âAlmost as much,â said Marcus. âYou want to see them, but you want to see me just a little bit more.â
Ted chuckled. âI told you. Iâm not going to be the source of any tension around here.â
âWell, what do you think?â asked Eddie. âDo you want to come down to the dock and fish with
